What is a chiropractor?
The specific definition of a chiropractor is a licensed healthcare professional who treats disorders of the musculoskeletal system through manual adjustment or manipulation of the spinal vertebrae to correct nervous system dysfunction. When we think of a chiropractor, we often associate them with neck injuries, spine injuries, anything along the vertical plane of the body.
How can manual adjustments help with these disorders? The concept behind chiropractic care is to re-establish normal mobility of the spine (and/or neck), which should lead to relief in the spinal nerve area.
A chiropractor can help relieve symptoms for various conditions such as lower back pain, sciatic pain (nerve pain down the leg), neck pain, repetitive strains, and even chronic headaches.
However, a chiropractor’s services are not just reserved to those with chronic pain conditions. Regular chiropractic adjustments can help keep your body in working order by relieving undue stress and pressure on the nervous system. Even minor misalignments in the spine can have detrimental effects to the way our body functions. The goal with regular chiropractic care is to find and correct any issue before it results in a serious problem. The same reason you go to your mechanic for yearly inspections, you go to your primary care physician for yearly check-ups – it’s important to help prevent problems before they start!
